Philips Viva Collection Digital Airfryer Review HD9230/20

They say greatness comes in small packages. Well, that’s certainly true for this nifty, little kitchen appliance. The Philips Viva is one of the smaller members of the fryer family we’ve tested.

It’s made of plastic and comes in a sleek black color. It has an easy to use digital control screen where the timer and temperature control buttons are clearly visible.

  • In a Jiffy
This fryer is faster than any conventional oven due to its higher convection force.
  • No Nuking Needed
Although microwaving is faster, baking is a much better option for re-heating your food.
  • No More Washing Worries
The entire baking cavity is washable – even in the dishwasher!
  • Release Your Inner Chef
Don’t be afraid to delve deep into the recipe book. There are no limits; you can fry, roast, grill or even bake.
  • How Low Can You Go?
With its rapid air technology, the cooking process gives healthier, low-fat cooking results.
  • Keep the Control
It’s simple and easy to pre-set your cooking time as well as temperature to ensure the best results.

  • “I Need Some Space”
For a “little oven”, this fryer needs quite a lot of countertop space.
  • The Need For Spend
This fryer doesn’t compete with the speed of a microwave. However, it is not that much of a remarkable time difference that should deter you from purchasing. We’ll take food with less oil over speed any day.
  • Not Very Family Friendly
This fryer is best suited to singles/and or couples. There are larger Philips models more suited to families of 4+.

Product Features

Product FeaturesWe don’t like looking for things and with the instruction manual being as helpful as it is, we really didn’t want to have to consult it, so the digital touchscreen made everything clear and concise; you can also set the exact temperature at which you want to cook your food – up to 200 degrees! An integrated timer will also allow you to pre-set your cooking times up to 30 minutes. The double-layer cooking surface with the added bonus of the cooking drawer and basket being removable made cleaning easier, especially with the food basket being dishwasher friendly. This is a powerful little appliance with its 1400-watt cooking power.

Price & Value for Money

Price & Value for MoneyAs we mentioned; this is one of the smaller fryers we’ve tested. We don’t believe that the small cooking capacity should necessarily dishearten or dissuade a future fryer owner: the tray is ideal for 1-2 people. This appliance offers you a wide variety of entire meals that reach far beyond what you probably ever thought would be possible. In this case, you can rest assured that you’ve made a high-quality purchase from a trusted brand.

If you want or need to cook for a larger amount of people though, the small cooking capacity should probably motivate you towards a larger Philips model, such as the HD9240/90 Philips Xl Airfryer.

28.7cm wide x 31.5cm high x 38.4cm deep.

This air fryer has a cooking capacity of 0.8kg of food.

What You Can Cook

What You Can CookIf you are looking to feed a small number of people (1-2), the high temperature of this little appliance allows you to prepare a multitude of meals such as an entire steak or roasted chicken meal – even fish is a viable and tasty option. There are so many choices when it comes to side dishes – fries, spring rolls, prawns, chicken wings, chops, and mini-desserts to name a few.

Final Verdict

This is the perfect fryer for a bachelor/bachelorette, couple or small (as in tiny) family. It’s easy and simple to use – ironically, without the instruction manual.

If you don’t need to cater to a crowd this really is a fast and effective way of cooking healthy meals with the possibilities being endless and surprising. You’ll soon find yourself collecting the various optional accessories and exploring the recipe booklet in depth.

Washing-up is no longer something to be dreaded and with this nifty gadget doing all the work, even the worst cook’s cooking doesn’t need to be feared. Definitely a product worth investing in if you are not catering to a large group of people.
